Why choose a hard metal roof?
Hard metal roofing offers durability, ease of fabrication, lighter weight than some other roofing materials, can be curved, low maintenance, corrosion resistance, low thermal movement, lightning protection, radio frequency shielding, and are 100% recyclable. Hard metal roofs have a high initial cost but a very long lifetime. Metal roofs will not rot, split, crack, dry-out, chip, warp, leak, unlike all other common roofing materials.
Durability
Made of various metal materials — such as tin, aluminium, zinc, copper, and steel — metal roofs are known to withstand some of Mother Nature’s most wicked rages. Be it heavy rainstorms, hailstorms, and snow, metal roofs will keep homeowners safe and away from all kinds of windblown debris and natural elements, perfect for our beautiful coastlines. In addition to being fire-resistant and impervious to the most unforgiving weather and troublesome pests, metal roofs are also an environmentally-friendly roofing solution for their unmatched longevity, superior energy saving features, and high recyclability.
Longevity
The typical service life of a metal roof is two to three times longer than that of asphalt shingles. Research finds, metal roofs have a significantly longer expected service life than all other roofing materials. Metal roofs are malleable and can be pressed and shaped without suffering any breaks or cracks. Lasting considerably longer than the average 15- to 17-year service life of asphalt shingles, a metal roof can last from up to 60 years to 700 years. Combined with its minimal upkeep, it is no wonder that homeowners love metal roofs for their generous financial savings in roofing repair and replacement. Though initial upfront costs are higher than asphalt options, the roof will last the lifetime of your property. Metal roofs are commonly known for improving home value by 1 to 6 percent. The trend for going green is not slowing down anytime soon. In fact, research done by various groups has unanimously found a growing interest in eco-friendliness and sustainable living among both homeowners and buyers.
Recyclability
The unmatched recyclability of metal roofs makes them a favourite of many green enthusiasts. Metal roofing is the most eco-friendly roofing solution. Many metal roofs contain up to 40% recycled steels, while the content of metal roofs in itself is 100% recyclable. As a result of its high recyclability and reusability, most metal roof materials rarely become waste in a landfill. When compared to Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) estimation of 11 million tons of asphalt shingles ending up in landfill, it is clear why those in the government agency and home improvement industry are calling metal roofing an eco-friendly solution for property owners.
Wide choice of colour and textures
Modern metal roofs are available in many different colours and textures.
Zinc is particularly suited to marine environments, perfect for the stormy coasts of Cornwall, with the potential to last up to 60 years with the right build-up. Requiring no maintenance whatsoever, Zinc does not need to be painted to maintain a pleasing, smart aesthetic, rather coming readily available in a pigmented, natural or pre-patinated finish, or even with roller applied textures.
Copper is the longest lasting metal, as well as having an extremely appealing aesthetic for your metal roofing and cladding. It is corrosion resistant and equally requires no maintenance which, coupled with its impressive lifespan, makes it more expensive than the other options, but it can be argued that it is more cost effective on account of its ability to last longer and withstand more. It is available in natural, pre-oxidised or pre-weathered green, and in terms of tones, it can come in bronze, gold or even green.
Historic Christ Church in Philadelphia is the oldest-known copper-roofed church in America, dating back to 1727.
St. Mary’s Cathedral (as shown below), Hildesheim, in Germany, had a copper metal roofing system installed on it in 1280 A.D. An example of a copper roof that is well over 700 years old and it’s still going strong.
